Description 


Join KACE and LeadingAge Kansas on Tuesday, September 12th in Salina for a full-day of training on MDS updates that go into effect on October 1, 2023. The training will include important best practices for current MDS responsibilities and prepare you for all impending changes that will impact quality measures, quality reporting program items, value based purchasing, and reimbursement. 



Registration: 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM 



Agenda



8:30 AM: MDS Review - 3 Admin CE


Participants will participate in knowledge tracks to test their understanding of accurate MDS coding practices from Section A through Z.   Presenters will share the most common coding errors and pitfalls with strategies to increase accuracy.



11:30 to 12:30: - Lunch Provided 



12:30 PM: MDS Changes – 1.5 Admin CE


Participants will learn about the upcoming MDS 3.0 changes and best practices to educate the interdisciplinary team to ensure documentation and coding accuracy for all new MDS items and updated coding guidance.

2:00 PM: Connecting the Dots – 1 Admin CE


Focus will be on how the new MDS items will affect Quality Measures, the new Quality Reporting Program items and upcoming Value Based Purchasing.   


3:00 PM: Capturing and Keeping your Reimbursement -  1 Admin CE


Strategies and processes will be summarized for participants around ensuring all MDS data is supported by appropriate documentation to fend off any negative outcomes on TPE audits.




Learning Objectives


  • Review MDS Sections A through Z and identify areas of common coding mistakes
  • Recognize the October 1 MDS changes and coding guidance for new items
  • Connect the dots between MDS and the new QM, QRP and VBP calculations
  • Strategize processes to capture and keep appropriate reimbursement



Workshop Speakers


Karen Welsh is the Vice President of Clinical & Reimbursement Excellence for Functional Pathways. Karen Welsh has over 30 years of SNF and post-acute care experience with an extensive background in 5-Star and Quality Measure improvement programming and outcome management. Her areas of expertise include: PDPM, clinical program development, compliance, documentation audit and improvement processes, clinical reimbursement, and EMR development and implementation. Karen holds a master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology, RAC-CT, and RAC-CTA certification through AAPACN. She is an active member of Advion (formally NASL), NARA, The Alzheimer’s association, and LeadingAge in multiple states. In her current role as VP of Clinical & Reimbursement Excellence with Functional Pathways, Karen oversees the development and implementation of clinical programs and policies for over 180 facilities across 24 states, directs analysis of clinical outcomes to guide patient care and clinical process improvement and develops clinical protocols and pathways to ensure functional patient outcomes. Karen is passionate about guiding quality patient care and improving clinical and reimbursement outcomes, a passion she enjoys sharing with therapy teams and client staff by providing education regarding PDPM, Medicare and Medicaid regulations, and clinical standards of practice.


Jennifer Callahan is a Clinical Outcomes and Reimbursement Specialist with Functional Pathways and an SLP by background. Jennifer has over 20 years experience in providing care and therapeutic services, as well as developing programs, education, and training materials around providing care for the aging population. She has held various operational and clinical positions, is RAC certified, been a speaker at several state and national level conferences and has extensive experience along the post-acute care continuum.

This educational event has been approved for up to 6.5 continuing education hours for Licensed Adult Care Home Administrators, Adult Care Home Operators and Dietitians by the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services. Health Occupations and Credentialing approved provider number (LTS A0009).


LeadingAge Kansas is approved as a provider of continuing nursing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. This course offering is approved for 6.5 contact hours applicable for APRN, RN or LPN re-licensure. Kansas State Board of Nursing provider number: LT0102-1116.
